Technical Post: Camera Dolly
our whole group decided to utilise the dolly to make Kyle go off into the distance. In this instance it sort of worked as he was retreating backwards but it didn't work because the background wasn't moving too.
However, this could be fixed by making Kyle walk towards the Dolly as opposed to having it simply move away from him. This would make it look as though he is exiting his setting and entering the Media room. In addition to this, the Dolly moved so far that it exited the Green Screen and if we were using it for a Music Video we would not have allowed it to exit the setting as it would break the illusion that their surroundings are real.

Technical Post: Green Screen
When using the Green Screen we experimented with very different techniques that each gave a different effect- some of which were desired and others that were not. One thing we found that didn't work at all was flashing lights while using the Green Screen as it created different gammas and contrasts which meant that keying didn't work efficiently.
None of us had ever experimented with using a Green Screen and so we found it hard to implement at first but after following the instructions we were able to do it, even though it wasn't to the best of our abilities. One thing we found hard was to remove the background correctly without leaving random segments that made the video look awkward- however, we were able to rectify this by using a background that wasn't affected by the change in colour- one that matched it.
We have looked at the different backgrounds we could have used and understand how each one would be implemented and how through keying you can duplicate images to make the final effect more tech-savvy and visually appealing. This allowed us to create a very simple, but effective, final product in our example as seen above.

THE RESEARCH AND PLANNING PROCESSES
Research and Planning
Various amounts of research went into how we would get our thriller opening to reflect other real thriller films. One of the researches we did was looking into the conventions of a thriller film. For example low key lighting, quick cuts, mystery and suspense. Another piece of research which we did was primarily about the type of audience that attend thriller films typically. This is why we used a free online questionnaire making website in order to make our questionnaire the reason why we did our questionnaire on the website is so that it could be accessed publicly and we wouldn’t have to waste time going around asking for the answers in person. From the questionnaires we found out the age range of though who typically watch thriller films also found out what they expect from a thriller in order to make sure that we added the right components so that our film would appeal to the audience’s expectations. This later helped with our planning as we planned out our target audiences using the results we found out from our questionnaire. More importantly another piece of important research which we did was looking at the age restrictions which helped us confirm our target audiences after deciding on everything that we would include. For example we wanted to include blood in our thriller opening we were only able to do this with a 15 age restriction anything lower mean that we would not be able to have blood in our thriller opening. This is why this research on the age restrictions in terms of what you can or not can include was very important because in real thriller openings they would have to abide by the rules of the age restriction. Also the shape of a thriller opening whilst researching this we got to view examples of thriller with a certain type of opening which follow an order of both titles and credits first along with the title or just the title of the film with the credits at the end. For our preliminary task we didn’t have enough time for research or planning at all so we just improvised more than we planned.
POST-PRODUCTION
POST-PRODUCTION of the Thriller Opening and the Preliminary Task.
SCRIPT:
After we retrieved all of our footage, we used Final Cut Pro to edit everything together. It was very easy to get a hold of all the techniques to edit like cut, crop and ken burns. we were able to play around with the lighting and colour of the footage to be whiter or darker. Also, we could incorporate some fade from the footage to the title screen back to the footage of the next scene This gave the opening a more realistic and professional feel. We were deciding what effect to do with the title frame and what colours and contrasts we wanted to use. We went from using a completely white harsh background to a grey background which blended well with the atmosphere of the scenes.
Through post-production we added an overlay of the sound of rain to enhance the ambiant sound. We also inserted the sound a police sirens to fit the visual images and the event of an actual police car driving past the main character which we had simulated to have happened.
When editing the footage of our preliminary task, we had very limited skills and time so we did the bare minimum. We inserted some music to add an element of humour, which made it clear that our work was an amateur piece because it was very childish rather than serious.

CONVENTIONS FROM REAL MEDIA TEXTS
DIRECTOR'S COMMENTARY (SCRIPT)
PRELIMINARY TASK
In the middle of year 12, we were asked to construct our own preliminary task whereby we had to include the three concepts to maintain continuity editing throughout the video.
These concepts include the 180 degree rule, which refers to the idea that there must be an imaginary line drawn across the room, cutting it in half. This is to ensure that all shorts are filmed from the same side of the line. if the line is crossed, the character all appear in swapped positions disrupting the sense of realism and causing the audience to be disorientated. This was displayed during the conversation between Aidan and Shane. We were successful in not breaking the 180 degree rule.
The second concept used to maintain continuity editing is the match on action shot which refers to the cutting between two shots that shows that no time has passed between them. Specifically, it is when you cut during an action to another camera angle but showing the action from the same point in time that you left it from the previous shot. Match on action was showed when Aidan was walking out of the toilets. It was also shown when Aidan looked at his reflection in the window and continued walking towards the sixth form block.
The last concept needed to show that we had complete understanding of continuity editing was the shot-reverse-shot. this is when two characters are conversing, the shot shows the character looking to where we imagine the other character to be without actually seeing them and reversing this to the other character and alternating when the director feels it s necessary for the audience to see that characters current emotions or when they are actually speaking. This was primarily shown during the conversation of Aidan and Shane.
THRILLER OPENING
Overall we were extremely happy with the final result of our thriller opening. We made some clear comparisons between our opening and other thriller films and found a clear similarity between the main actors. The character of Ethan can be clearly compared to that of Ryan Gosling's character in 'Drive'. We can note a similarity in composition between the interrogation scenes in our opening and in 'Gone Girl'. finally, there is a similarity in frame in 'Skyfall', as we see the black silouhettes of the characters on the right side of the frame in each product.
our production and distribution logos were self-made and inspired by a number of other distribution and production companies, like 20th century fox, warner bros and pixar. throughout the whole opening, we used sinister suspenseful music incorporated through post-production. this is a clear convention of the thriller genre and it really helped to create atmosphere. the ambient sound of the rain creates a very silent and mysterious atmosphere to the scene which is another way in how we tried to incorporate the area of sound to out advantage in following the conventions of thriller films.
We also used many images manipulating the light and shadows to add to the conventions of thriller films. through this the audience is able to become fully immersed in the opening as they can see the darkness of the surroundings and begin to feel as if they are in the film themselves.
