Suffragette in terms of PRODUCTION

PRE-PRODUCTION - sets and costumes were created and carefully considered to show the accuracy of the history and also added to the verisimilitude. The script was also carefully considered (30-40 drafts) in order to make sure it was historically accurate and there were no flaws. also, they had to hold auditions to find the best actors to play the main roles. For example, Carey Mulligan played he character of Maud Williams and Helena Bonham Carter played the character of Edith New.

PRODUCTION - hand held cameras was used which created a strong sense of verisimilitude as it made the audience feel as though they were actually a part of the revolution. it also helped the audience to feel as though they were experiencing the same feel in got loss and confusion but also empowerment and showed the real struggle women had to go through in the 1900s. The use of lighting was particularly important, for example in the scene when they had to blow up the house, they had to ensure the lighting was low key to show the dramatic element of the scene and create the highest level of intensity as it was an incredibly tense scene. also they had to make sure the lighting wasn't to harsh as todays artificial lighting. they were cautious to show that the lighting is a very yellow light and not white communicating to the audience again the time period in which it was set.

POST-PRODUCTION - the soundtrack-soundscape was enhanced and added over the film to show the significance of a certain scene. For example, contemporary music was used in the scene where Maud's son was being taken away from her and it was very emotional. the contemporary song was a good idea because in using it, it attracted a younger audience.
